Luton Town Hockey Club recognised a drop in participants playing hockey throughout the years and put this largely down to the fact it is no longer taught in many state schools. In an attempt off set this, the club applied for a grant to provide six weeks of free after school hockey sessions at a number of primary schools.
The success of the LSPAN funded project was seen in many ways. Luton Town Hockey Club saw a 40% increase in their junior membership, getting more children active while raising awareness of hockey as a sport. The activity was also popular amongst the teaching staff at the schools, so much so that Luton Hockey Club produced a free learning resource pack, to aid it being taught within the PE curriculum. The teachers gained continued professional development by working with the Luton Town Hockey coaches and the children received expert coaching in a previously untaught sport.
